How To Keep Furnace Filter In Place
| 2008-Oct-16 12:00 am Furnace filter is always aptitudeWhenever I modify my furnace filter (avg 6 months probably), information technology is ever bent inwards towards the furnace fan. I assume that it gets covered with dust first, and then the air pressure eventually forces information technology to curve in slowly, but information technology might just happen quickly, I've never checked. Last time I replaced it, I had to have apart the spot where the air intake meets the bottom of the furnace by removing all the screws, equally I could not fish out the filter even with a long coat hanger. The 16x25x1 filter normally drops into a slot in the brusk horizontal run between the air intake downward duct and the furnace itself. There appears to be metal flaps to hold it in place, which I bent dorsum to be at a 90 degree bending instead of 45 as they were this fourth dimension. My real question, beyond "why does this keep happening, should I simply supervene upon my filter much more often?" is really, does the fan need cleaning now that this has happened numerous times? The unabridged house is only 5 years old, and so is the furnace. It's natural gas, loftier efficiency if that matters. |

Last time I replaced it, I had to have apart the spot where the air intake meets the bottom of the furnace by removing all the screws, as I could not fish out the filter even with a long glaze hanger. The unabridged firm is simply 5 years former, and so is the furnace. It's natural gas, high efficiency if that matters. The good filters a metal bankroll to support the filter. The el cheapo will not. Using a filter for 6 months is style to long. At the about lx days simply it is recommended to change it every thirty days |

1 edit | 2008-Oct-16 12:13 am Metallic backing? You mean like a wire mesh in the pleats? Or a metal frame effectually the edges? I buy $twenty 3M filters usually - the "best" ones they accept at Dwelling Depot or Lowes. They have a wire mesh on one side, but the entire border frame is cardboard nonetheless. 6 months is just some habit I learned from when I was a kid. We had a propane tank and lived in the country, which probably doesn't change much, but my parents had always just replaced the filter at the start of winter and summer. |

TheMG | 2008-Oct-16 12:46 am I've got one of those reusable passive electrostatic filters. The frame is rigid aluminum. Seems to work pretty practiced as the ducts and fan are very make clean fifty-fifty after years of utilize. Cleaning is easy: merely hose it down with water. I'd recommend them. |

Y'all haven't said anything well-nigh anything simply a furnace, so why supplant it at the beginning of the summer? I try to supervene upon our filters every month or every other month (AC and heat). vi months is definitely way too long for a ane" filter. |

| 2008-Oct-sixteen i:51 am Aye, I take central Ac besides. I realize I could be replacing the filter more often. Moving on - would it be very likely that likewise much dust has gotten into the fan at the base of the furnace? What I am request is if the filter is just to assistance go on the air clean in the house, or if the fan or other parts of the furnace may break likewise soon because of the dust that may accept gotten in there? |

| 2008-October-16 1:59 am If this has been happening on a regular basis then aye the fan is dirty. Everything is muddy. The nigh important thing is the Air-conditioning evaporator coil could be clogged. It is the ane which gets the dirtiest and can as well be the most expensive to make clean depending on the installation and type of unit of measurement you have. The most of import reason for this filter in your system is to keep the evaporator clean as it volition totally clog. With many systems cleaning it involves evacuating the freon from the system, cut the refrigerant lines, taking out the evaporator and cleaning it, and then reinstalling, brazing the lines, pulling a vacuum, testing, so adding freon. This can cost in the expanse of $750 (plus or minus $250). It is really bad to permit the filter go and then dirty that the air bypasses it and dust gets into the organisation. |

| 2008-October-sixteen vii:56 am Replacing it more often may help, merely it may just lessen the problem and not eliminate it. To eliminate it, get some narrow strip steel or a metal rod and build a support on the furnace side of the filter in the middle. This volition add additional support to help prevent the filter from bending. |

| 2008-Oct-xvi 12:02 pm We used a 3M replaceable filter had a hard plastic frame with some plastic strips crossing the back of the filter to support it. Similar to wire mesh filters. Shouldn't get any bending with them. With cardboard filters would sometimes get damaged when inserting them and permit air to pass the filter. Slot was pretty tight fit. To bad the local hardware stores stopped carrying the replacements. I think using the hard plastic type pushed whatsoever the obstruction was out of the way. Don't seem to be getting the aptitude corners anymore. I generally use iv filters during the year. 2 for winter and 2 for summertime. Like having my windows open in bound and fall every bit much as possible. |

| 2008-Oct-sixteen 7:29 pm Depending on how "dirty" the environment is in your dwelling house and depending on where the return air is located, half dozen months might be too long between filter changes. For example, if the return air grill (where the air enters) is low to the floor and the floors are hardwood or tile, the return will pull in dust, dirt, dog/cat hair and other particulates more hands than if the floors are carpeted. That, plus the fact that yous're probably using 3M Filtrete Loftier Operation (90%) Filters, is causing your filter to get pretty muddy, which is creating a lot of static pressure on the filter. That's why your filter is being sucked in towards the furnace blower. The bottom line is you should be changing your filter more than often than you lot take been doing. Check information technology after a month. If it'southward dingy, alter information technology. If information technology's not that dirty, try another month. Then, y'all'll accept a skilful idea how long to get between filter changes. To make information technology easier to remove the filter, exercise it when the blower isn't running. |

Any idea what a sane range is for that type of chore? Near take furnace maintenance packages. They will do a bones furnace check-up, and check all bones components and part. One of the packages *should* include cleaning. Yous would have to inquire what's included in each. Make sure to ask if they leave the blower in identify, or if they pull information technology, to clean. He/she probably won't know until they meet it, whether it needs to be pulled (caked with crud). That will affect the prices. Without pulling, $80-$100. |

That is why they accept the "1700" rating. You need a more forgiving filter or better even so, get a media filter installed in your duct. A 6 inch (thick) filter volition permit air to freely flow through the system and not have such an imbalance of air. I'll bet that you do not have enough return air on your system. A lot of people do not. Calculation the filtrete filter, you lot only add to the restricted air. I would at least become a more than forgiving filter and change it once a month. |
